It used to be that after the memes got popular in mainstream, people would abandon them here in fear of being called a normalfag or just generally looking uncool. Rickroll is a great example of this.
Now, cross-site users from Reddit and other places just keep regurgitating the memes when they catch on over at their site and bring them back over here, thinking they are still popular, and newfags see it thinking the same. Memes don't really die anymore, they just keep getting more and more bastardized until they lose all meaning.
