You can only use Pokemon after you defeat a gym, so you start off with one, once you defeat the 1st gym you're allowed to get another, and then it keeps going until you have a full team.

You can not evolve pokemon. All pokemon must remain in their base states until just before the elite four at which point you may evolve them.

By being smart about using Pokemon in gym battles. Anyone who stays on the bench doesn't have to be released. Sweeping with only one Pokemon means only that one Pokemon is released.

Don't blame me, though... I only came up with the gym rule, not the white rule.

You have to beat important trainers in under 5 minutes (Gym Leaders, Elite 4, Rival, etc) or else you have to box 2 of your mons until the next important fight.
