I was 12. I didn't consider myself older than the rest of the fans. Lots of kids at my middle school loved Pokemon.

I think a lot of the younger guys believe that because Pokemon has been around since they were babies, they were the first target demographic. I'd say it was kids 8-14 or so in the beginning. If you were 2 when Red and Blue came out, then I'm sorry, you weren't really a part of the experience.

Not that I'm trying to be an elitist about it or anything, I just find it funny when /vp/ treats older people like they have no business still being into Pokemon.

Was 7 when I got crystal as my first game, but was watching the anime since it was broadcast on Kids WB, collected cards and family obsessed as well. Can't believe its been so long. My dad had this Gengar keychain nd my mom collected the baby plushies.

I was 16. It was weird. It was awkward. But a couple of underclassmen had copies so it wasn't completely devastating.

Strangely, it was one of those kids that got me into Pokemon. I seriously hated it. He let me play it and be damned if it wasn't fun.

I was 15 when Red came out. I didn't hear about it till my BFF told me I had to try this Pokemon game. I got Red and was Immediately hooked. I remember playing Silver at college waiting for class to start and playing Ruby the first night I spent in my own place.

No one cared. But then there wasn't as big of a neckbeard/fedora/spaghetti culture around gaming and anime. It was just "oh cool you like video games and those Japanese cartoons." It was a good ice breaker.

I was 14 when Pokémon became a thing in my country in 1999, and that was thanks to the anime. By then I was already into anime, games and other nerdy things, so I shared it with my other nerdy friends.

I wanted to play the games like crazy but we don't have localizations here and buying the american or european copies was crazy expensive. And that's when a friend of mine introduced me to the wonderful world of emulators. I went to a cyber-cafe and put everything on a floppy disk, together with a bunch of txt documents with all kinds of stuff to try out from videogame pages. As you can imagine, things like the truck were there and I tried them all.

The first time I played Gold it was shitty translation from the japanese rom. For a while I knew the gen II mons' names in Japanese, and played Kanto the Kanto half of the game by guessing because it wasn't translated yet and it showed me a bunch of boxes in the dialogue. I constantly got stuck in places like finding the part in Misty's gym and using the radio to wake up Snorlax (I kept waiting for the fucking flute).

well i really cant remember how old i actually was when got my first pokemon game.
you'll see it was maybe 1997/1998 when this tamagotchi phenomena reached mexico and of course i wanted mine so dad got me one for xmas, then all i can remember is that i was checking my club nintendo magazine and watching "nintendomania" when gus rodriguez the local videogame warlord introduced the nation with this amazing idea of letting your tamagotchi device fight with others in the new game that was coming from japan on the gb so i waited patiently for xmas since it was the only time of the year i could ask for any kind of expensive toy (remember i live in mexico so anything was expensive back then) and my amazing dad got me a gbc (rosa mexicano) with a cartridge that included something like 20 /25 games all in japanese of course i remember it had harvest moon, wario games,bomberman and such, it had like 3 pokemon games from wich i picked the green version.
I remember i had no idea what the fuck was happening in the game so it was not like i immediately loved it but then my cousin found an gb emulator wich countained pokemon blue and red (yes old 31/2 disk) and omg i was somehow able to understand the game and i loved it after that i got pokemon yellow and been a fan since then. I was 11/12 when played the R/B maybe 14 when i played yellow and all i have to say i never cared that much for what people tought about me for playing pokemon even at high scool.

Not many middle schoolers wanted to be involved with that Japanese cartoon that all of our younger siblings were into. I'm sure that there were actually some people my age who played it, maybe a lot, but nobody was bringing their Game Boys into school or anything.

I never actually tried the series myself until years later, around R/S/E.

I think I was 10 when I started watching the anime. Really liked it and found out there was a game of it so I asked my parents for Pokemon Yellow. Got it for Christmas with a yellow Game Boy Color. It has been 16 years and it's still my favorite franchise. A lot of kids in my school would gather together and trade and battle during recess, it was amazing.

was a fifth grader and hung out with the older kids who helped me fix my team they told me I was breaking the rules by having two dugtrio on my team

got yellow for my birthday followed by gold then crystal
also the super awesome music filled trading card game
I was bummed I couldn't bring my mons to gen 3, and that gen 3 was filled with tons of monsters I knew nothing about
