Personally I think Platinum, HG/SS, and BW2 are the only pokemon games worth owning anymore.
Platinum had it all, battle frontier, better battles still had the sinnoh undergound which was fun as shit, and a much better story with giratina, also the best online to date
HG/SS is great for the nostalgia lords who cream over gen 2, but is also a decent game in its own respects, it improved everything gen 2 did but better, and gave you all the pokemon you needed, rematch battles, and a ton of extra shit. It makes the best use of motherfucking team rocket too.
B2W2 Is a guilty pleasure, I love the animated sprites, I like all the changes that improved B/Ws horrible story, Colress and neo team plasma are far better villains. It also gives access to all of gen V's mons, which oddly enough really grew on me.
I guess Emerald and FR/LG if you like gen 3, but anything earlier is complete eye blinding dogshit only harbored by nostalgia.
And anything later is even worse, Gen 6 is the decline of the series into stagnation.
