The best pokémon games are currently HeartGold and SoulSilver but due to Nintendo's incompetence, wifi's down so you won't be able to catch them all. In the case you really wanna play right now go for ORAS.

OP download all the roms and play on a flashcart
pokemon DS titles cost nearly $50 at retail for the used carts alone here in California

if you're dead set on buying the games, pick up xy & ORAS
if no 3ds

get heart gold or soul silver, then black or white 2(no you don't need the prequel and sequel together it doesn't add much to the story)
also highly recommend platinum although it's the slowest of all the games and can drag on for what seems like an eternity

platinum is more slow paced than the newer games but is comfy as fuck. If you find all the new mons in platinum overwhelming try heart gold or soul silver, they are remakes of the second generation and have a mix of gen 1 and 2 mons.

Apart from new mons and moves these are the main things you missed.

>Special Stat split. The 'Special' stat was split into special defense and special attack. (which it should have been from the start) This happened right after RBGY

>Physical/Special split. Pokemon moves are now either physical or special. Before generation 4 (diamond/pearl/platinum/heartGold/soulSilver) moves were phys or special based on what type they were. New moves were added to compensate for the drop in usable moves such as giga impact, which is a physical hyper beam.

>Type Changes: Steel and Dark(evil) types were added in G/S/C(generation 2). Fairy type was added in generation 6 (the most recent). You can google what they are strong against/weak to easily.

>From generation 3 onwards (the red/green remakes and ruby/saphire/emerald) you get running shoes near the start of the game. Now you can hold B to run, it is still slower than a bike though.

>Abilities! Since generation 3 every species of mon has 1-2 abilities. These are passive effects that happen in or outside of battle. For example, 'early bird' makes pokemon wake up within 2 turns every time. Gen 5 (black/white/BW2) added a new ability for every species which is harder to get but generally a nice buff.

>Weather! Can be induced by a certain moves (rain dance/sunny day/sandstorm/hail) or abilities (only a few mons have these abilities) for 5 turns.

You didn't miss anything because they're all the same. Platinum is just the better game in the series so it's the only one worth playing because the rest are the same but crappier. BW/2 are also worth playing because they feel like actual additional games. So if you are going to play pokemon, play platinum and if you want to play more, play BW/2 and nothing else if you don't want to waste time on crappy games.

Hey OP, why don't you try a more financially conservative approach and just get an emulator of Gold and Silver on your phone? After that follow up with Ruby and Sapphire. 400+ or 700+ Pokemon after a while of being away might be too overwhelming, at least this way you can test yourself if you truly want to get into the games without suffering buyer's remorse from purchasing a DS and game.
