Y was the first time I actually battled against my friends regularly, and got into breeding. I only used my in game team before this, and probably battled other human players a total of three times per game.
Also, all of my friends picked the game up, even the ones who had long since dropped the series.
those friends dropped out again for ORAS and probably won't get into gen 7, so we were all hyped together, and constantly breeding new pokemon to use against one another.
I saw this as a reboot to myself as a trainer, since I kind of stopped caring about "Catching em all" as of gen 3, and I always used the same pokemon for the whole game.
This time I started out with my living dex for the first time, and instead of using a set team, I would constantly rotate pokemon and train them up, which made my playthrough last a little over a month.
So because of friend hype and having new goals and a new way to play, I was probably blind to the shit story... also "First 3D pokemon" helped the hype too.
I think HG/SS and B/W might be tied for second.
