That said conversations during battle like the one you posted are pretty unlikely overall. Sure, there's gonna be the occasional moron who can't stop blabbering on about how stupid he thinks a certain thing you did/have is and how it's "sooooo bad" but most of the time people don't talk too much.
Concerning your opponent's points, it seems like he doesn't know too much and is pretty bad himself. Apart from that you should obviously be able to play whatever way you want without the fear of being ridiculed, although that is wishful thinking even in less snobby gaming communities.
By the way, if you have some non-OU mons you like, I would really suggest to try out some of the lower tiers since pretty much all of them are generally more fun - especially PU and RU, if you ask me. It's a shame most people don't really consider this because they think anything that's not OU somehow doesn't matter or whatever and instead whine about how they can't use their "bros".
