As soon as AG began and I saw May in her first episode I instantly liked her more than Misty and had no desire to see Misty on the main cast again. Once the Contest arcs started it cemented it further.
Even back when AG was airing it became obvious pretty early on Misty wasn't coming back, I think most realized that after the Togetic eps aired and Misty returned to the Gym rather than staying with the group.
