>>22797846It's only balanced in that good players know how to use the basic tools in doubles, those being Fake Out, Protect, Redirect moves, Wide/Quick Guard, and double targeting. It's how they get away with making ridiculously overpowered things like Mega Mom and Mega Mence, they're not as powerful if you deny them turns. Like fuck, VGC10 (or 11 I forget) allowed Kyogre and some other things but they still managed.
The top five megas, out of *44*, have ~75% usage between them (I am using the showdown stats but they don't publish usage stats beyond "here's the 10 most common"). The top two alone have about 50%. Now I may be wrong, but megas are supposed to be competitively good, right? What exactly would be their other purpose, making story mode even easier? But it's a stretch to call even more than half of them viable in VGC, the format they care so much about. This doesn't strike you as poor design?
