It's because Flying has excellent neutral coverage, resisted only by Rock, Electric and Steel (so almost perfect neutral coverage with Ground). It also has a well-distributed 120 BP STAB move.

Point taken, but the two moves mentioned were Quick Attack and Brave Bird because priority, so I used those. Pinsir can hit harder than Talonflame but needs to drop priority to do so.
