Pikachu being the mascot is the sole reason why people use it. If it wasn't one of the original 151 pokemon it would be completely forgotten as well.

The reason it's so popular is because GF changed its design so much to MAKE it become popular. I don't hate pikachu, I simply prefer hundreds of others over it.

Sure, it was fairly popular. But it's popularity wouldn't have lasted if GF didn't keep adding new gimmicks and design changes to it (IE cosplaying pikachu, balloon pikachu, the new anime cry, giving it that yellow orb thing, giving it it's own games, etc. etc.)

I like the game sounds but boy did some of them get really fucked up in gen VI. One example off the top of my head is Metagross. Now it sounds like less of a distinct sound and more like rusty metal rubbing together.

How did Pikachu rise up to be the main mascot for Pokemon, while Jigglypuff just became one of the big Smash-only icons alongside Ness and Falcon? I mean, both were pretty popular, couldn't Game freak make both relevant?
