Chimchar because this nigga rapes sinnoh, the only thing turtwig has over it is getting curse early and earthquake after evolving into torterra but chimchar doesnt need a heart scale for his other strong STAB, piplup is just pathetic.

All this means shit because you can get starly in the first route and a gible plus the earthquake TM after the second gym

It landed shit like Magmortar and Flareon on Platinum. But a Skuntank with Flamethrower is still the best fire type in the game.

Okay, OP here, and seeing as I just finished a playthrough with a fire starter and grass types don't appeal to me, I'm feeling pretty set on picking Piplup.

How much will that screw me over in-game?

You'll be fine. Water will help you in the region's shitload of caves, and Emploleon has access to some good TMs. Also Drill Peck, which is neat.

Magmar/Magmortar, Houndoom, and Flareon are all great for in-game.
Move Tutor can also teach Fire Punch to your fighting type of choice.

Munky is a typical fast sweeper; it can prove arduous if you can one shot everything in the game. It's sometimes more enjoyable to try out the slower, more defensive guys.

Besides, the only reason people recommended Munky was because muh lack of fire types, even though Houndoom exists. And if fire types don't matter to you, then it hasn't much to say for itself.

You'll be fine. The Steel typing also helps mid-game since you'll be tanking ordinary trainers and wild Pokes for days. Just pair it up with things that resist the three types he's weak to.
