And Heatran fears one of the most common attacks in the game, what's your point? The sole reason Chesnaught doesn't see far more usage is because it has pretty heavy competition from Ferrothorn and Celebi.

Point remains that it received an incredibly situational ability while Greninja got one of the best offensive abilities in the game.

I don't think you can seriously say they didn't intentionally make Greninja way better than the other two. It's not just the ability, but it's a big part of it.

There's a huge difference between being biased and catering to a majority fanbase.

Greninja is not being shoved down our throats. It is simply the most popular Kalos starter and gets the best treatment as a result. That's how businesses work. I'm not gonna stop liking Greninja just because a lot of other people like it. Being a hipster sure must suck.

Also, Charizard and Mewtwo are my favourite Pokémon.

Greninja's signature moves are moves that are important to him in Smash. Mat Block isn't even good in Pokemon, its only possible use is an excuse to give him a useful counter move in a fighting game.

Well, yeah, none of the Gen V starters were good anyway, but picking Tepig was like choosing a stale fruit cake over a paper bag with shit in it and a paper bag with shit in it that was also on fire. And Fire/Fighting is still a pretty good type combination.

And, once again, none of the other Gen V starters got signature moves.

Sure, it isn't Infernape/Blaziken, but Emboar is easily the Unova starter with the most going for it, esp. when the competition is no-moves Contrary Serperior and Samurott.

I don't enjoy the salt as much as i enjoy apparent justice.

I remember loving this bastard since the moment he was leaked in Sep 29th 13. The design was creative and standout and i instantly knew he was gonna be in my team no matter what. But when the amie screens popped up a couple of day later, it genuinely became my favorite pokemon since i started following the franchise nearly 20 years ago.

When some started that it would rot in RU with those stats and typing, i didn't care. When people were saying that his supposed HA would switch his type AFTER the attack, rendering him unable to get Stab on anything while the other 2 reportedly got a Sp Def. version of Fur Coat and a defense buff in every turn, i didn't care.

So when i saw that he was the clear starter forerunner even before the game release, it felt nice that he was being appreciated.

When a month later, polls were being conducted and it ended up voted best kalos-mon in each one of them some even landing it in Top 20 all-time Pokes, it felt great.

When the simple "i'd like to see this cool thing in Smash Bros" pipe-dream actually managed to become a reality, well, it felt incredible.

Since most of my previous favorites were often overlooked, seeing such overwhelming love for my new fave felt awesome, as if universal justice were shutting up all the naysayers.

In the end it was all good. And it felt good too.

Greninja is justice for all these years.

Most waters are trash though, usually shitty fish mons. Hell, Basculin was added because they noticed the Unova dex didn't have a fish, and its dex entries say its main use is for eating.

Something that surprised me is that the PokéSpe manga gave X a Chespin (and a Charmander but that's not the question) when everyone thought he would have Froakie. This is Y that takes Froakie, and since she already has Fletchling, you can already picture that if she manages to be a good trainer, she'll have two awesome Pokémon. Yeah, i'm pretty sure that's what he meant too, retard. Before HA's all three of them were total NU trash who could hardly even carry their own weight ingame except for Emboar, who could be used in RU without a problem. Definitely tied with Johto for worst starters competitively.

Now, he's massively more popular, but so is Charizard, but there is pretty much where the similarities stop, Greninja double shits on the one he's supposed to beat, and shits on the one who is supposed to beat him since he can just become flying or any type really. His inherent weakness to his "counter" doesn't exist past turn 1

This thread got me thinking, are there any examples of Pokemon that got really popular despite not having official backup?

As in, no movies to their name, no legendary status, Event download, anime importance or stuff like that? Because i feel like Greninja actually fits the bill for most of these since it caught on really quick and the Smash inclusion was Sakurai's choice, so it wasn't an actual official push. Although i guess you could say competitive prowess counts as some sort of push.

Honestly, the only one i can think of is Stunfisk, and the guy's only popular in Japan.
