One of the examples i thought of was that maybe at some point you're so far out from a center and you might just fuck up and one of your pokemon dies, now instead of some massive "NO MY POKEMON IS DED NOW I END WORLD" shit, your character could just feel more attached and more worried about the rest of his "friends" "lovers" or whathaveyou (depending on your level of autism/waifufagism)

I am thinking that maybe at some point during the story your Pokémon are seized or even killed and you have to scramble to rebuild a bit, but I feel like that may from a gameplay standpoint needlessly punish the player.

The objective is to make the experience feel that this is what happens when you can't protect them.

At two points in the game you're trapped in enemy territory with just your team of 6 pokemon. The first time it ends when you lose a fight, or if you make it to the end. The second time you just have to keep throwing yourself at the bosses until you win and get access to the pc/wild pokemon again.

Mature as in the main problem in the storyline isn't so ridiculous and cartoony that's it's cringe worthy nor does it have to edgy and grimdark. Just something that goes over more plausible issues; like exploitation and extortion (RBY, GoD and Colo.) and inequality (BW). It's like Nintendo is too focused on bringing more people into their market when the market is already saturated with their older fans (which is still a rather large).

Needless to say, I'll still play the games because I've grown up playing them - I'd just like something that wasn't so ridiculously childish and didn't make me cringe while playing.

I enjoyed it very much. A huge downside to it though is that in order to finish the protagonist's story, you have have to play through cookie cutter scenario's with other warlords. Beat all the "side quests" and you can play the hero's last chapter. To this day I still haven't done it.
