Smogon doesn't offer anything new considering they do stockpile each meta into the newest one, there's a reason Region Born and no tradebacks are implemented in each ladder season on battle spot. Each generation has its battle style to offer, what is the point of Wish Chansey or Leftovers teams (that are also the origin of the stall playatyle) still being played on simulators? These fanmade metas can be reproduced with free clause battles or tierlists on your 3DS or other console butit's not like they bring the so praised better metas than the official games.
And for VGC there are NB and other communities anyway.
Smogon is a thing a part but sure doesn't offer a 100% better alternative meta.
Pointing on how the "community" can decide the bans is also against the whole game goal. You are not supposed to bitch at what you get in each ladder season and special tournament sessions.
Smogon can at best help some beginners but it doesn't take a genius in creating obvious and reasonable sets and spreads.
