No, Joe. Having backwards compatibility was always planned. They have to use a different method since they run on different hardware. In the age of the internet they decided to use the internet to do it rather than make new hardware which would cost extra (like the GBA slot being in the DS for example). The whole point of pokemon is trading, you really think they were going to take that away in this day and age, especially after the backlash they got with Gen 3?
