Haven't played a Hoenn game before.
Which one is more worth my time and money? Well, I can obviously emulate Emerald for free. So a better question, should I spend money to play OR or play Emerald?

The only significant thing that's bothering me while playing Emerald is the lack of the physical/special split. Next comes the non-permanent TM's.
If these things bother you and you like OR/AS's aesthetics, go play OR/AS. Otherwise Emerald is more fun in my opinion.

What the OLD SHCOOL, classic experience? Play the original on GBA.
-- 2D graphics that are still pretty nice
-- No EXP share. Not even an option to tempt you.
-- No megas or fairies.
-- Actually include both Team Aqua and Magma.
-- Feature a kick-ass showdown between Kyogre and Groudon.
-- Possible to capture everything in one go.
Emerlad's only downside really is the lack of online options and the almost impossibility to play the game against anyone.

If you want an experience similar to X/Y get a version or ORAS.

You get it if you return to Mr.Stone after talking to Steven for the first time. Obviously, though, it's the old balanced exp share.

Actually Emerald did have the EXP Share, except it had to be equipped onto the pokemon you wanted to level up (that way only two pokemon got the exp and even then they only got half of it each) and you'd only be able to get it after the third gym at the earliest.

Emerald for a refined 3rd Gen Pokemon game.
Battle-Frontier.

OR/AS for more Pokemon variety, 3D, Online Battles, Megas, Cutest Dragon Nerf, Secret Bases, Soaring and Dex Nav.

Emerald + Showdown for decent games.

OR/AS for actual fun.

If you've played games after Hoenn you're better off playing ORAS. The technical improvements between generations are subtle and easier to notice when you go backwards while all the criticisms of ORAS are from people who already played Hoenn games.

If you've never played a 4th, 5th or 6th gen game then by all means get an Emerald rom and move forwards from there.
