I have a question. How do the anime writers decide which Pokemon the main characters get? It was obvious Ash was going to get the trio of Kanto starters, but how did they decide Ash would catch a Krabby or 30 Tauros?

I've wondered this too, do they have complete creative freedom to decide who catches what and which pokémon will evolve, or do higher ups control everything?

Even the dub voice actors didn't know which Pokemon would become main characters, and that's the reason Charmander's dub voice is terrible. They said on DVD commentary, that Charmander's voice was done as a joke, because they never expected Ash to catch him.

Man they pissed me off as a kid. Tauros was so incredibly hard to find and them catch, and As had fucking 30 of them.
