Yeah, same with me. I wish it was better, but as it stands, in most games Donphan and Phanpy only appear late enough that you're almost certainly filled out your team with better pokemon.

It's because he's almost always either in a Safari Zone, swarm, post-game, or is a near-endgame version exclusive.

Seriously, this line has one of the worst availability distributions of all non-legendary Pokemon.

It's a real shame, too, because I think they're pretty cool but never had a good opportunity to use one.

The biggest disappointment from HGSS for me was that phanpy and tedirioursa were not catchable before the first gym like in crystal, even if they were morning only and stupidly rare.
But seriously, while phanpy is okay early that teddy is a fucking early game sweeper in Crystal; you teach it swift and just watch the world burn. It even learns lick for coverage for crying out loud, even the gastly's die to it

Donphan's Plasma Storm print has an attack that, for one Fighting Energy, does 40 to the Defending Pokemon and switches Donphan with one of your Benched Pokemon.

Combine that with support cards (Muscle Band/Silver Bangle, Strong Energy, Robo Substitute, Fighting Stadium, and Korrina) and certain Pokemon (Reshiram/Zekrom LTR, Wobbuffet PHF, Sigilyph LTR, Suicune PLB, and Pyroar FLF) and you've got the makings of deck that can win tournaments like Regional and City Championships.

Well, fuck, now I want a Woolly Mammoth evo for Donphan. And it's gimmick could be its feet are hidden under the wool and it leaves tank like tread tracks behind it because it's feet are so close together.

Good looking pokémon don't need to be good competitively. That's what the designers think.

They throw a bone to the ugliest by making them OP somehow so they still have appeal.

At least, that's what believe since Gen IV because of how retarded looking the strong pokémon could be.

If Piloswine's already covering the woolly mammoth idea, why not compliment with something like a mastodon?

Could even make them similar stat-wise, wherein Donphan gives up speed for physical bulk.

It's a non-STAB, non-boosted 65 base power attack.

With that in mind, I find it somewhat impressive that it can still solidly 2HKO Ferrothorn.

For consistency, I'll slap CB on it.
252+ Atk Choice Band Donphan Fire Fang vs. 252 HP / 88+ Def Ferrothorn: 296-352 (84 - 100%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO

252+ Atk Choice Band Tepig Fire Fang vs. 252 HP / 88+ Def Ferrothorn: 300-352 (85.2 - 100%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO

I know that Tepig doesn't get Fire Fang, but that's literally how much of a difference STAB makes (base 63 Attack versus base 120).

One of the few Pokemon where I like the whole line. Phanpy is ridiculously fucking cute, and Donphan is way cooler than a lot of pokemon. Also benefits from that movie appearance, I was crazy hyped when I saw that.

When I used to run Counter Gliscor, I would usually bait them into using it and then counter it. To my surprise it wouldn't kill Donphan because it took less then half of my Hp.
