If you're not over 27 or a retro game connoisseur, I'd recommend playing HG/SS over G/S/C. They're very loyal to their roots, all things considered, with a lot of improvements.

Gen 2 is really just Gen 1.5, HG/SS don't really fix any of its problems either, that horrible level curve is really off putting.

The level curve is indeed a problem, but it can be forgiven somewhat due to the lengthy nature of the game (and how it ends). I'd still recommend OP try it, since the vast majority of us have played every main series game and we tend to find something to like in each.

I haven't played HG/SS either.

Unlike ORAS HGSS actually managed to pay respect to all gen II games. So it's no good reason to try GSC out instead of HGSS. It's not really a bad game, but a lot of the mechanics are a bit outdated, which is why I would recommend trying HGSS instead. But if you can judge GSC by the time it came out and is just curious then be my guest.

It's my favorite gen but I'm well aware that's just nostalgia.

HG/SS are bretty good if you don't want to deal with rather outdated mechanics and graphics.

Play it. It shouldn't be a bad experience, especially if you like retro games. Bear in mind that while a lot was improved since gen 1, it still has some outdated mechanics.
