I've played but never finished a pokemon game.
Now I got a 2DS and will try again.

Which DS or 3DS game should I go for? Hearing a lot of praise for soul silver.

Platinum and HG/SS are great.
B/W2 are also great, there's also the 3DS games, ORAS are good but don't have any postgame content, and I wouldn't really bother with X/Y unless you want to play through a new region, I would suggest just waiting for X2/Y2/Z.
It really depends though, what Pokemon games have you played?

HG/SS are massively overrated. Good, but overrated. If you don't care two shits about muh Battle Frontier i'd go with ORAS. Better storyline, megas, Delta Episode is fun. XY are also fun too.

/vp/ only rates games based off of post-game content. That's why HG/SS an BW2 are always rated number one or two on /vp/. Not to say they aren't good, but well, post-game isn't everything. ORAS introduced 20 new megas, every single legenadry, etc but the only thing they ever talk about is the Battle Frontier. And let's be honest, it would've just been seven different Maisons. I would've liked a rental facility sure, but otherwise I could care less.

I would say pick up B/W2 and then Platinum if you wanna keep playing the games.
B/W2 has a new region, wide variety of Pokemon along with a bunch of new ones, pretty long story mode along with a bunch to do in the aftergame.
Platinum is the same deal, just not as much of a variety of Pokemon as B/W2 and from what I remember slightly harder.
The engine is slow though, not as quick the GBA and Gen 5 games, but if shouldn't bother you too much.

You could also get B/W first, since B/W2 are sequels, but you can only catch Unova mons in that game, which may not be what you want to do, so just make the decision and get whichever you'd prefer.

Platinum is my favorite pokémon game so I would recommend that. Although if you have problems finishing pokémon games it might not be the best for you since it is fairly slow.
