Hey /vp/,

So I got these two Machamp cards right when the TCG was first released from two separate booster packs. I've been trying to figure out for years whether one of these is fake or if they're both real and Wizards of the Coast just fucked up an early release of the card. What do you guys think?

Right one is definitely fake. Left looks real-ish, but Machamp was starter deck exclusive, so getting it from a booster pack is impossible.

The right one is fake. The icons are wrong and it's not even the standard card size. If you put it in a stack of cards it wouldn't fit.

But as far as your question goes, if you got 'em from first edition Base Set boosters then they're legit. The only problem is that 1st Edition Base Set Machamp is easy to find thanks to all of the Two-Player Starter Kits having one.

The one on left looks like it's Shadowless, though...

Both are holo, but the colors in the background are different. Left one is blue/yellow, right one is purple/yellow.

They both have shadows. I bought one of every starter deck and some boosters so only one Machamp can be from the decks I assume.

They're both real, but you didn't get either from Booster Packs and are just remembering wrong. Basically, the only way to get Machamp was to buy the 2-player starter deck. That Machamp always had a 1st edition symbol. As printings came and went, there were minor changes to the layout such as the font on the HP, but they still stuck the 1st edition symbol on later printings of the card.

The one on the right is an early printing, while the left is a later printing. They just both have the 1st edition symbol because EVERY Machamp has the 1st edition symbol.

"Shadow" refers to the dropshadow under the picture box that later printings had. The one on the left has a shadow, while the one on the right doesn't, meaning it's one of the first three printings.

I didn't know the early cards had format changes so I assumed one of them had to be fake. And yeah, I'm probably remembering wrong about getting them from booster packs. Thanks for your help!

No, it's not. Don't be fooled by the 1st edition symbol, that's a second printing. Even then, most real base 1st editions don't break 20 dollars unless they're super popular.
