So a lot of people here know that Unreal Engine 4 is now out for free. So I decided to put up my 2 passions togheter: Let's code a fucking pokemon game!

So what I basicaly want is a 3D version of the original Pokemon Red/Blue without any major modification, except maybe making all pokemon availables. Any advice from a coder or anything? Or anyone who wants to hyelp with animation or something?

I'd be able to contribute ripped gen 6 stuff if this project actually goes somewhere and you wouldn't want to create new models for every Pokémon.

if you can actually get the game running, then there is no problem even if you only have 3d-animations without moving, that is the least of your problems. the basic question is: what about the map? kanto/johto/kalos?

Kanto. As said it the original post, I want to start out by doing the very first game. If I can get the engine working and I'm able to do Kanto, I will then start making other generations, but I'll start out with Kanto. Doing the map probably won't be hard, just long. What I'm worried about is, yeah, everything about animation, even though it can come afterward(people would be more encline to help if they see an already working game) and the engine(for the batlles mostly)

the thing that all the models are from real pokemon is a good thing, because all the projects here in vp take about 2 years just to decide the 100-150-200 fakemon they wanna use. if i were you, i would try to make the player moving in a place called battle frontier...maybe outside battle factory or sth like that.. or even a new frontier factory in which the base idea comes from your own.. that would attract a lot of visitors/ helpers / designers.

The hard (read impossible) part of this would be to do all the art. The coding is doable, with or without UE4 honestly, but the amount of content in a 3D Red/Blue would be way too much.

I agree with anon, constricting yourselves to a smaller part (eg. one town, or even battle frontier facilities) makes for a better and innovative game, as well as decreasing the need of designers, who aren't in abundancy looking to take hooby-wise projects with a lot of work..

A good start would be instead trying to do something like Pokemon Stadium. If you get that much working with 5-6 pickable pokemon each with a static moveset, then even that much would be fun.

Good point...In fact, what we were planning to do was to make it one town/route at a time and adding each new pokemon when we could encounter them and their evolutionnary line, so we wouldn't get bored doing all 150 pokemon or the entire map at once. But I agree starting out with just a basic combat system would be a good start.

if you need any advice, from the way i see it your specialty is not designing.. so leave the models the way they are, in general they are meh... and probably they will get better with the new pokemon game, but spending the time in models is useless , beacuse at the end of the day, all these models belong to gamefreak/nintendo/masuda etc.. and nodoby will notice a better model, but a better game , or a better city, or better mechanics , or better/new ideas will be very much appreciated through the fans.

Yeah, I agrre with the model. I can do modeling a bit, but I won't make any pokemon model because it's a waste of time. I mean, I can't sell it since it's a pokemon game, so I can take models off the internet, an I probably wouldn't do a better job. Only the animation part tickles me, but I'll likely give this job to someone else and after the game itself is working.

From my own experience, RPGs are a pain in the ass not in the programming part, but in the artistic part.
As /vp/ I know we would have too high expectatives, because all the complaints about 3DS games.
But it would be nice to see a Clover-like 3D Pokemon fangame. It would be at least the double amount of work than Clover, however.
