>>22973608>which is exactly what they're doing in >>22973069I'd have to see the original Japanese but I highly doubt it. Like I said, common spoken Japanese (and Chinese and other asian languages) do NOT use gender pronouns.
>geniuses presumably just wrote off as a fansubber mistake. No, it's not an error, it's a translation. Subs aren't meant to be LITERAL translations, they go for legibility. If you wanted a literal translation of almost any Japanese/Chinese media, you'd have people going around saying "It really did well!" or "He/She is my best friend." But that isn't how people speak in English so they replace it with the appropriate gender pronoun when translating.
Saying "he" in the English sub isn't evidence that that PARTICULAR line references gender in Japanese because using "he" is practically mandatory in common English when talking about a male character. Again, this kind of thing is par for the course in translation. For example Chinese (not sure about Jap) in addition to not having gendered pronouns doesn't have future/past tenses or pluralisation. So "Confucius say it eat five apple" would technically be a "correct" translation in terms of the explicit information given in the original sentence. But any subtitler would get fired for writing that, you'd obviously translate it as "Confucius said he hate five apples."
Languages are very different guys, and translation is complex. They're not all just analogues of English.
