Watch other people play competitive on youtube, learn basic strategies, then go onto smogon team rating forums and copy other people's teams.
You're never gonna be able to make a good team at the start, just copy and paste other ones.
Once you start to get better you can try and make teams, but only once you have a better understanding of the metagame.

If you wanna play lower tiers, I'd suggest Blame Truth and Haydunn, higher tiers I would go with Shofu and Xenon.

Just be careful who you start listening to. I wouldn't bother with wi-fi battlers, and some poketubers are pants on head retarded. I'd actually recommend just lurking showderp because it is often a prime example of what you should not do when teambuilding or battling, thanks to champs being foreverially stuck in elo hell.

If you want commentated videos on how to play, I recommend just searching smogon premier league and watching those videos and then watch the vids of commentators you enjoy.

All of this of course while you're getting your ass kicked on the ladder so you can get real time experience of how to donk

Is there anyone better to watch? I've never really found any other wifi battlers, there's not really a lot of them.
Shofu may not be the best but Xenon is definitely good for learning.
Blame Truth is also good for all the lower tiers and Haydunn is great for NU.

If we're giving off some lower tier battlers, i'd recommend Pyrotoz since he offers fairly unique sets/teams to play with and is generally a pretty good battler. If you have some experience in battle or just watch him enough, you should give certain ones a whirl.

I actually found it very helpful to use the random battle on showdown. Gives you good feel for the game in a competitive format, then you can build a team when you're ready.

This is a really good list. When you get better (~1600) and are still looking to improve, there's some other stuff. BKC does a pretty good job in his SPL casts, and PDC does well with his stuff, but that's only once you've improved a lot.
