well, now with amie, there is the nintendog like sub gender...If you are looking for RPG ("real ones") try for PC since freedom usualy goes with open world, moddability and tons of Go of bullshit...
that said, I would not buy a pokemon game done by any other than GF. they may have their flaws, they kept many things we (well, at least I) liked about the series.
I would not leave 720+ critters to a company that spent 17 millions on one single character's hair. the current FF level of detail is unnecessary and would kill the spirit, the way GF handled the change from 2D to 3D is just the best you could think about.
besides, giving pokemon to square will make the franchise the main thing it have : unlike square, GF never take themselves seriously.
