They are the worst rivals, because they are NO rivals. The Game tried to make you think you are traveling with your friends and meet them from time to time. Not the normal Rival Characters as usual. But You can call Serana sort of a rival because you got to battle her for megastone and shit.

Yes, easily. They're annoying, useless, and barely have any personalities or development to speak of. Even RSE May/Brendan are better by virtue of not constantly hounding you. I still don't understand why we needed 4 rivals, any more than 2 is overkill. Plus it's harder to properly develop their characters when you have 4 rivals to attend to.

Yeah, Barry's my favorite for similar reasons. He's a great balance between the douchebag rivals like Blue & Silver and the simpering rivals like the XY ones or ORAS May/Brendan. He feels believably like your childhood friend who is having a friendly competition with you over being the best trainer. He has possibly the best team out of any rival, some decent character development, and a nice theme. And I like his hyperactive personality, even though some find it annoying.

Tierno should have been your battle rival with his smogon (rain) dance team from the anime.

The game should have had contests and Shauna should have been your rival there.

Trevor could have at least handled dex rewards, or even your rival in a bug catching type contest.

Calem/Serena needed more personality. They weren't dicks, spastics or underdogs like the others, they were just bland.

Hopefully the remakes flesh them out more.

He may not have been a proper rival but he still had more going for him than some of the others and the generic "I wanna be the strongest trainer ever!" or "i'm in this journey for the memories!" shit, its sort of swell that theres more than one person (the player) who actually aims to fight an organisation attacking the region rather than sitting in the back heckling you to go on your own or going into one battle then letting you do the rest.

Hugh is the worst, actually. Up until your final preE4 battle he only has his starter, pidove evolution and elemental monkey. Not to mention he's the most irritatingly two dimensional. I kind of liked the Kalos rivals, but I would rather they had more than 3 pokemon. If they had that and just a touch more personality, they would be perfect. For the record in regard to my taste, my favorite is Barry, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Fleshing them out won't save them. The anime made me realize this. They work okay as rivals to Ash's gang in the show, which was a nice save by the writers, but they are still fairly annoying. Too bad Citron/Clemont and Eureka/Bonnie weren't the friends in XY too.

There are very few rivals (let alone trainers) before post-game since Black and White that had a full team.

There are only 2 non-E4 NPC's in Black and White that have a full team of pokemon, and they're veterans in deep caves.

Honestly, I wish that thing was in every Pokemon game. That way they can raise difficulty for the main game, and if things get too hard for the kiddies, then they can just check the TV for the help they need.

Expand on it and give it a GPS-like app as well. That way, dungeons can be Mt. Coronet-tier hard and the kids can still get through with some help.

Second to May/Brenden but they were pretty bad.

Rivals haven't had any competitive flare to them since Barry nearly ten years ago. I thought Hugh might have something but he was dry as toast.

The gen VI game is legitimately awful. It's like GameFreak was afraid of us feeling any negative emotions at all and just had them trying to perform fellatio on you the entire game and talk about how great you are. It's pathetic.

I wouldnt call Teirno, Shauna and Trevor rivals. They're just your friends who sometimes (very rarely too) battle you just for fun. Serena/Calem is the rival, she asks you about it in Lumiose then compete with you during your journey.

Most people, especially the kids of this age, aren't going to use it. Just like people assume the EXP. Share is always on.
Seriously I've had to explain that you can switch it off to people because they don't bother looking in the Key Items pocket.

Cheren and Bianca were middle tier rivals in my books, they were far from bad compared to the others in the games and notably Cheren who I felt had a slight condescending smartass feel to him especially with others, they were good but not great.

They came off the heels of Barry, who had the most swag ass rival team to date. They were in a more story focused game, but like a lot of BW they lacked personality to back up the story. Much of their characters, particularly Cheren was presented to the audience in tell, not show. I see people replying saying he was some kind of smartass, but he never acts anything like that. He just said he wanted to be strong, and had pretty much accepted that you were stronger well before your final battle. Cheren pre-E4 had only 4 Pokemon and it was a pretty shit team. Bianca's actually put up more of a fight. He's not as much of a punching bag as poor Calem/Serena, but he's pretty wimpy.
