So how do TM's and HM's work?

When I boot up a TM to teach my hawlucha "rock break", what is actually happening in-universe? Am I making my pokemon watch an instructional video?

I think a better question is, why are HM's even a thing?

It undermines a pokemon's combat ability when you have to teach it crap moves like Fly or Surf. It just forces you to carry around weak HM slaves whenever you want to explore the world.

HM's should just be an item you can use in the field, like your bicycle or fishing rod.

Surf? Inflateable raft.
Flash? Lantern.
Strength? Maybe give the player a shovel or something.
Fly? I dunno, how about giving the player a helicopter?

Yes, I get that the idea is that people in the Pokemon world use their pokemon for everyday tasks like transportation, but come on. The bicycle could have been an HM too, and thank goodness it wasn't.

But that's exactly why. Hydro Pump's accuracy is dicks. Surf does more damage overall when you factor in accuracy.

Imagine if bicycles were an HM instead of an item.

If bicycles weren't in Pokemon, you'd be trying to shut down anyone who suggests there should be bicycles, and you'd be defending HM06:Ride and trying to pretend it's relevant to the game's meta.

5 PP is plenty, all moves should have only 5-10 PP. If you manage to let a move run out of PP, you're terrible at the game and should just stick to Angry Birds or something.

Bikes and helicopters are two completely different things. An average 10 year old would have a bike, i can't imagine any 10 year old having a helicopter. Soaring should be a permanent feature, and I think a surf board would be a good item to replace the HM surf.

How about this:
Mobility HMs like Fly, Surf, Rock Climb and Waterfall, plus the Bicycle are all replaced by a single item: the Saddle

With it, all large enough pokemon with a quadruped or similar body shape can be ridden as mounts, . by beating gyms, you can get improved saddles that allow to ride water pokemon to surf and flying pokemon to fly.

Decent idea?

Headcanon: the trainer plugs the disk in the button of the pokeball, and then it spins and does all the job. Until gen V it also broke because it spinned too fast, unlike HMs which were made of a special material.

Dumbfuck, you teach your Pokemon Surf unless they need that extra damage for a very neccesary KO (or unless they can't learn Surf, see Rotom-W), taking misses as a risk.

This. Fly is a good enough move for in-game. Heck, a lot of Flying types don't even learn better Flying-type moves until pretty late (Not everything learns Brave Bird). Plus, the computer doesn't switch.

I used Tropius as a team member in OR, and not as a HM slave and holy shit does it learn jack shit naturally.

I had to transfer it to X and teach it Energy Ball via TM and then teach it Fly. After that it was decent.
