i always saw the bee sprite as Bellsprout lying on its stomach

the eyes are the same, the bug body is bellsprout's mouth, the wings are leaves, and the antenna are its roots

I'm not defending it but I can see how some of their reasoning is at least partially justified. Gen 1 is always going to be more memorable to the masses than gen 2. Which was still great but you just can't beat those god tier starter designs of the 1st gen. To this day no trio has come close to their perfection design wise.

Holy fuck anon, I literally just noticed that it was a bee. I always saw it facing downwards like the rest of them do, so I was never really sure what it was supposed to be. I thought it was a weird bellsprout too.

I don't know what is wrong with it / you guys, I don't even have my glasses (the regular ones, not the nostalgia ones) and all I see is a beedrill... but, yeah, it kind of looks like a bell when you put it that way...

I liked those things but it was ok simply because they were here for non combat time, the sprite is necessary for clarity in a turn base battle.
