And, I don't know, there's a lot that goes into it. I've always loved Ghost types, if I were an actual trainer I would totally concentrate on them. And Gengar's just such a great ghost type. The Cheshire Cat motiff is really cool. He has a great evolutionary line. He has a great design with a real personality about him. He has a good balance of being really comical and fun, but at the same time genuinely menacing. For whatever reason, there's just always been a special quality about Gengar that spoke to me. I felt a real connection to him.
Not to mention, in terms of actual viability he's a great Pokémon, and an absolute blast to use. And since he's also Sugimori's favorite Pokémon, he's practically guaranteed to remain relevant every single generation.
