What if instead of HM's being removed,they're buffed in ways to actually be competitively viable? Or would it be better to just have more rideable pokemon to replace tm's?
Fly:pretty much soar
Surf:throw in some special b8 and the pokemon that bites is your ride
Dive and waterfall: said surf pokemon already has this ability as long as you've got the badges
Strengh:uhhh
Cut:slather special honey on trees that causes a random pinsir to come and cut it down
Rock smash:ryhorn's purpose in life

I think they should just be things that come naturally to certain pokemon, wether they know a move or not. The badge should be the only thing that dictates weather or not a pokemon will actually perform the task for you.

It's retarded that a pokemon with a massive scythe for a hand can't hack down a small tree, or a Machoke can't push a boulder, without knowing the proper HM.

Here's how I'd handle HM's if it were up to me.

I'd make it so that every pokemon can learn five moves; Four active, one reserve. The reserve move wouldn't be usable in combat, but it'd be usable in the field (if it's a field move like fly, surf, etc.)

You can swap in your reserve move at any pokemon center by talking to a particular NPC.

A little while ago I was programming a pokemon fan game from scratch. I had no plot, but I got the basic engine down. Anyway, in it, I replaced all HM's with items. Surf was a surfboard, flash was a flash light, cut was an axe, etc. Fly was difficult, so I ended up making it a mobile teleporter that could only teleport you to another teleporter. This made sense in single player, because it would teleport you to a teleporter in any Pokemon Center that you had visited prior. It made sense in the co-op multiplayer I had planned out, because then you could teleport directly to your friend.

I guess my point is that HM's shouldn't exist but their functionality is cool. They should be replaced with items.

strength should encompass cut and rocksmash. You could call it something else but we can all agree HM whores are not fun in the slightest. It wouldn't even be that bad if you could overwrite the attack whenever you want.

HMs are a damn plague, i hate needing a bidoof or something. I'm glad in ORAS they gave you a latios/as that could use surf/dive/fly

At the beginning of your journey, the professor or some corporation gives you a wearable device that allows you to borrow the strength of your pokemon. All you need to do is beat gym leaders to activate the device's actions and carry a pokemon that is capable of the action in your party. For instance, you beat the first gym leader, and the badge you get activates the Cut action on your device. Now you can go up to small trees in your way with the Beedrill in your party and use your device's Cut ability. "You borrowed Beedrill's strength to cut down the tree!" it will say. Some actions on the device can even be unlocked by capturing certain pokemon. For instance, if you catch an Abra that already knows Teleport, you can unlock the Teleport action, which Teleports you to any Pokemon Center, but not to every route like the Air Mount action can. Dig is also an unlockable action in this fashion.

To be honest I'd be fine if HMs stayed as they are, with the only exception being you don't have to go to a special NPC to forget them. It's really frustrating to have to delete an actual useful move for a new one because you can't write over fucking Cut or Rock Smash.

The problem with that is some guy will use cut to reach an out of place area/hidden item, remove cut with a TM, save the game, and reload.

He will get himself stuck and Gamefreak will have to suffer the cries of retards.

You can teach it Cut again, silly. The only issue I can see is replacing Cut with another move, wonder trading that Pokemon and then saving the game. Even then, they can make the tree respawn until you leave the place or keep the soaring mechanic so you can use it in case you get stuck.
