Amourshippers getting serious>I love XY so far as well, but I am going to admit really quick to you and everyone else here that I am vying for this ship to become canon and I am betting my future viewership of the anime on it. My trust with the writers is on a very tight string due to what they did at the Sinnoh League (Oh a Darkrai and Latios? Yeah, that's going to end well for Ash you twats) and with Unova as a whole. The lack of development in his character as he goes to different regions is frustrating, seeing as he should be learning life lessons from his successes and failures in the previous region. Right now, we are seeing Ash battle-wise and personality-wise at his peak. I love the first trio (Ash, Misty, Brock) but we rarely saw any character development in Misty and Brock. Here in XY, we have four equally well developed characters in Ash, Serena, Clemont, and Bonnie and this is the first time the group I have seen where the bond is equivalent to what you see in a family. If the writers are breaking trends, then please break the two big trends that everyone wants to see broken: Ash understanding romance and Ash winning a League. Let him win this League and let him get the girl that loves him more than anyone else in this series has in Serena.

Johto stagnated a bit, but was generally better written than Kanto if you take into account that a lot of Kanto's best episodes were setup stuff that could only be done because the show was new.
AG was better than that and gave the show a much-needed retooling to make it fresh again. DP was essentially a more solid variant of AG's formula. And now we have XY, which is trying new and exciting things again while retreading ground they know works in new ways, just like DP did.

Paul and TG were my favorite parts of DP, but I personally prefer XY's level of emotional/character development of the main group...the main cast in DP just felt kind of bland and superficial to me. Just for me personally, what XY has done in that department has helped offset its weaknesses in terms of lack of rivals and no TF as of yet. I personally think XY has the potential to get VERY good later on as the plot unfolds. But like I said, XY and DP are both rock-solid in my book.

Structure-wise, it sort of was. Nonetheless, the whole rivalry aspect, the revamping of contests, and the shared screentime between Satoshi and Hikari really made it an entertaining ride. The ending was satisfactory to me considering Satoshi's continuous maturity throughout the show.
Then everything changed when the Best Wishes Nation attacked. A shame, really. It had the makings to be the best of the series (I mean, you once again had two Gym leaders, one of them a future region Champion, so the promos looked promising), but the reset and the shit characterisations just obliterated even the slimmest of hopes.
