For me, fairy being new is actually a problem for me. A lot of retconned fairies were designed without the concept of fairies going through the designers at all, at least by the looks of things given only a few of them have anything to do with fairies or fairy mythology, which I think bled over into the gen 6 fairy designs.

If fairy type was there from the start or gen 2, then maybe gamefreak might have had an idea of what is and isn't a fairy type in terms of designs, but as of now, the type makes no damn sense. It might as well be the pink blob type, but the chansey line is about as pink blobbish as you can get, yet it's normal.

Are you dense? Almost all of them are based on magical creatures or are just different interpretations of fairies who are magical beings themselves. Most of your average "magical" pokemon don't even share a type thats tends to be associated with magic unlike Fairy.

There weren't many pokemon to retype either, so just be lucky your previous pokemon weren't made infinitely more edgy.

Dark is worse than fairy in implementation and theming, and has only gotten worse over the gens. This might surprise you but chansey is the egg pokemon, and all egg related moves are normal type. Shocking I know.

I think they're pretty forced, I mean they were put in mainly to counter dragon types but it's more the retyping of old pokemon that irks me a lot, the new fairy types don't bother me. Magneton doesn't because it just gained a secondary typing rather than a completely new type.

The only odd types are dragon, fighting, fairy and ground/rock.

Dragon: essentially lizard type. Justified by the fact that everyone loves dragons.
Fighting: It's not as though non-fighting types are pacifists. Might as well introduce Animal type or something.
Fairy: really small niche
Ground/Rock: There's no reason for both types to exist, it doesn't make much sense. They're both essentially Earth type.

Only a couple of Fairies are based on magic in the first place. One is Gardevoir, which is Psychic type, and the other is Xerneas.

Fairy shouldn't exist. Every Pokemon could be another type if you removed it, with most of them being better fit to another existing type. There is no other type in the game that can be outright removed and every Pokemon in that type could find a new one, except maybe Rock if you mix it together with Ground and create an "Earth" type.

"Hero" type. Majority of Pokemon with Justified are Fighting type for a reason. They're Pokemon that use martial arts/other fighting styles as well. They're all based on a fighting class, like Monks (Medicha) Sumos (Throh, Hariyama), Boxers (Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee), or etc.

Rock deals with mineral manipulation while Ground is Land Manipulation.Thats why Sandstorm is Rock type and not Ground type.
A magma based move would actually be ground type logically.

According to wikipedia Fairies are supernatural or ethereal beings, that usually are born from nature to protect things (you know, like the forest, flowers), look somewhat human-like and some of them are known to be playful or naughty.

There you go, Raltz is a human like being that protects its trainer, and has some mystic powers so it fits the theme.

Steel and Dark are forced too, and I remember everyone I talked to hating them when they first came out, and now they're almost universally accepted. I expect the same thing to happen to fairy, but not for a while.

It's a forced type, yes. It's not necessarily bad, but I don't really like it. I am biased because I've played since gen 1 and I feel it's a stupid change after 15 years of not adding new types, but if they can actually balance the game like they were meant to, I'll probably accept it.

by the last part, I mean that dragon type spam is still a thing, and there's absolutely no reason for them to resist bug

A Normal type added to a Pokemon usually makes them worse off unless it lets them abuse the trademark godly special movepool. All I can think of for that is Heliolisk.
