You think Nintendo knew Pokemon would be a smash hit back in 1995? Like, when Shigeru Miyamoto went to Satoshi and gave him tips and ideas, do you think he knew what was about to happen?

Do you think they knew it'd be a world wide craze?

Not at all. In fact, Nintendo initially rejected the idea because they didn't think it'd sell well. The same IP that went on to reinvigorate the dying Game Boy band and handheld gaming in general. What a fuck up that would have been, huh?

Nintendo certainly didn't know it was going to initially take off, but once it did in Japan, they knew it was going to be big in the rest of the world. There are old interviews when Pokémon first arrived in the U.S., where Nintendo said they expected it to be big here like it was in Japan.

Pocket Monsters was in development A LONG TIME. Hell, look at a lot of early stuff, they changed quite a bit.

Game Freak was also a third party at that point and was developing for other consoles as well, so Pokemon was more or less a pet project since its conception. They also had numerous issues, and it was clear from some of the behind the scenes issues with Gen I that they more or less HAD to get it out or cancel it.

My guess? A mix of both. They probably were banking on it being huge, but the development hell it had the first 2 gens caused issues (look at Gen 2 and the amount of cut content and alternate maps that are in the ROM still + early screenshots).
