Did anyone else enjoy the build-up to this generation more than playing the games themselves?

Nah, it's not just you growing up. The hype train is almost always more enjoyable than the game itself, and this phenomenon is far from exclusive to Pokemon. Journey, destination, etc.

Up until the second gym I thought the game was fucking huge, and then everything was downhill from there. Plus I couldn't get a Sylveon because I didn't look it up online and I eventually had to look up how to get Aegislash/Florges.

Either you grow up or it was just the leaks that ruined everything. By the time they released the games, everyone knew the gym leaders' team, the rivals' team, the E4/Champion's team and their rematches. Hell, even the common trainers were also leaked. The Move Tutors, the Mega stones, the new moves and Hoopa alternate form, and so on. On top of that, the official release trailers and CoroCoro spoonfed us with whatever else we didn't know yet. You didn't need to play it; you already knew its full content. Before the game was even released.

Now, next time, or maybe this year yet -- unless they decide to break the yearly release cycle for whatever reason, since no announcements were made as far as I'm aware of --, don't be a faggot. Refuse the hype train. You guys like to say "NO BRAKES NO BRAKES" for the sake of memes, but now that you know there ARE brakes, you'll only join it if you really want to kill yourself.

And, of course. Never listen to /vp/'s opinion regarding any game, perhaps except MD EoS, because angels and demons alike cannot bring themselves to say it wasn't at least 10/10.

Still, considering how GameFreak are running out of fucks to give, you might still find them bad games. But if hopes were a problem for you, you wouldn't be lurking this place, right?

You have no idea how badly I want a new pokemon game that captures me in the way some of the older ones did. Just seems that the most enjoyment I get from them now is speculating with you guys. Imagining what could be.

Feeling that way about any game is a rarity in all honesty because more and more people break street dates and leak everything online.

In the end you either like the game for what it is or accept that you only liked it because it was "new" and just drop it.

I've been enjoying Gen 6 more than the average /vp/ user seems to, but FUCK was that a disappointment. The huge, wandering stretch between the first two gyms got me really hyped for the length and depth of the adventure in Kalos. I was expecting a lot of exploration, side-quests like Parfum Palace and the caves, and the possibility of some real story. Heck, maybe the level spacing would work well and the final battles at the League would be truly titanic clashes. Then it suddenly hit a wall and piled up on top of itself. I still had fun, and it wasn't much different from the length of any other game, but that initial part was such a tease for what a more fleshed-out game could be.

I do enjoy Megas though, in part because many of the less-powerful mons I like got good treatment.

But other than that this gen is fantastic. I had so much fun playing through both XY and ORAS. I enjoyed XY a bit more but thats mainly because everything in this game was new: new region, trainers, story, Pokemon, Fairy type, megas. amie, super training, customization.ORAS on the other hand made spend so much more time in the grass than any other Pokemon game, the Hoenn story is also better now than it was in RS

The hype for the games themselves are usually better than the release. Its like with pokemon itself, you're going on the journey and discovering new things (leaks, fake or not) and you want to get to your destination (the game itself) but as soon as you get there and accomplish it, you're basically left empty because its over and you can't relive what was went through.

I enjoyed ORAS, if only because I did a special run on my first playthrough.
XY were super underwhelming too, that's why I have some hope that we'll get XY2 or Z version that is as good as BW2 were.

Seriously. The horns of RSE were essential to give Hoenn its signature feel of Gen 3. Now, the strings took over everything else and literally every composition uses strings for melody, chords, even fucking signature melodies/counter-melodies like in the trainer battle theme and gym leader theme.

The engine, while great for its graphical capability, makes battles rather slow; it's not Diamond-/Pearl-tier slow, but it's just slow enough to make you look away from the screen while the arena literally sets itself up to kill a level-3 Zigzagoon.

6th gen was a mixed bag for me.

I enjoyed XY, although judging by the first 3 gyms (up to obtaining Mega Lucario) you could tell they were initially aiming for something more ambitious than the final product, and that pissed me off. I hopped off the hype train purposefully sometime after they revealed Fletchling and others, still feel it was a good decision, discovering Hawlucha and all of the starter evos by myself was a lot of fun.

I didn't avoid spoilers with ORAS because i figured out there is not much to spoil with a remake of a game I already played 100+ times. I still can't decide if it was a bad or a good idea. On one hand I got myself all of the Mega Evos and Delta Episode spoiled. On another hand I can't imagine the rage I would feel if I found by myself that there is no Battle Frontier and Mega Flygon in this game.

I still feel a bad game is a bad game regardless of the hype it has. I was hyped for Platinum and BW2 and those games turned out to be pretty excellent. I wasnt hyped for HGSS at all and it completely blew all of my previous expectations.

On another side I was hyped as shit for both BW and ORAS (until the infamous demo leak) and those games turned out to be a disappointment in my book. So yeah, I wouldnt give up on the series just yet OP. If the third game turns out to be a disappointment though I will definitely start to worry as it'll be clear there is something wrong with GF as a whole.

Replaying Y right now. The first thing I'm noticing is how boring it is. It's pretty to look at but that's about it.

In each game there is usually something going on, you run into the evil team, you run into your rivals, you fight Gym Leaders. In Y the Gym Leaders feel like normal trainers and the rivals barely put up a fight either. The most interesting part of the game is getting the Mega Ring.

Compare that to Johto where you jumped from gym to gym finding cool stuff like the Red Gyarados, or BW where you run into N and your rivals all the time.

It's just like there's nothing going on.
>No story
>No characters
>Bad pacing
>Forgettable bad guys
>Pretty but forgettable locations

At least Serena is somewhat attractive.
