Maybe I was just dumb and unobservant, but even now looking back on it I have to say there's little functional difference when you are talking about playing in game. There are only a handful of instances in the entire franchise where being stuck in after killing a pokemon would even be a fraction of a concern because even after 20 years of games the devs STILL insist on every trainer class having strict themes based on types, so you just move whatever pokemon is most appropriate to the front, engage the trainer and mash your stab. Totally brainless either way.
What would be really awesome is if they made it so set is the only way to play and made it so there was a wide variety of appearances that trainers could have that wasn't directly related to their class so you wouldn't know until they introduced themselves what theme they were using - if they even had a theme - and THEN you choose which pokemon you want to send out first like you're choosing your lead in a competitive match. And PLEASE make it so that gyms are based on slightly more loose themes than just type restrictions. Instead of a ground gym or elite guy have a volcano theme that allows for ground, rock and fire types, that way they can have more options for coverage and you can't necessarily steamroll everything with JUST ice moves or JUST fighting moves or JUST water moves with one pokemon. That's the whole reason the games are too easy - very little to do with set or shift.
