Why was Pikachu such an asshole? We have no backstory for the little fuck. We know that Charmander was abandoned, as was Bulbasaur, and Squirtle just found a group to hang out with to mess with people. All of Ash's main pokemon have backstories.
Even Team Rocket's Meowth has a backstory. Hell, Jesse's Wobbufet has a wife and kids.
