Heroes had phenomenal architecture and aesthetic. There's a lot of chase scenes, but they're chase scenes in VENICE FUCKING ITALY; you cannot have enough chase scenes there.

The movie opens with neither a Pokemon Battle nor Ash winning, the movie's setting is given a lot of depth even in the intro, a bit like Blade Runner where the biggest star is the setting itself. I wish they had expanded on the relationship between Bianca and Latias a bit more (As there is clearly something deep there), but that's really my only complaint.

The battles aren't turn-based or static; they move and flow throughout the city in real time.

The villains are competent, succeeding at nearly everything they try and blending into the crowd (See Diancie Movie for how to screw this up) and have to be stopped by a desperate act that requires the ultimate sacrifice.

A GIGANTIC, ZOMBIE AERODACTYL CRASHED INTO THE BRIDGE OF FUCKING SIGHS!!

Yeah they managed to kidnap Latios with some gymnastics moves and infrared shades, but otherwise their motivations are shallow and they're forgettable in pretty much every way.

Please, this is as bad as the Chosen One bullshit that shows up in half the movies. Part of what makes 3 so good is that Ash isn't being a dickweed like usual and is just trying to rescue his mom, and the antagonists were actually somewhat sympathetic and not one-dimensional gymnast chicks. The battles in 3 are better than the ones in Heroes by far, more memorable and not over in 1 minute.

The only good things about Heroes was Latias and the setting.

Mew is the other one since Ash and Co never really had a full on interaction with Mew. I would love to say Mewtwo too but a lot of shine was lost with the last movie appearance.

Deoxys came from space and Rayquaza smashed the meteor threatening Hoenn it happened to be in that sent it flying out pissed the fuck off. Games and Ashime (read; shit that shouldn't represent Pokemon or have any influence on the series any longer) are thankfully completely separate continuity.

So, let's make a Pokemon movie. What do we do? Cool legendary fights destruction pow pow, that's what the kids like, right?

Let's make it a tragic story about a little girl who loses her parents. In her grief, she comes across the Unown, who are able to make her wishes come true. With this power she tries to create a fantasy world where everything is perfect, shutting herself off from reality. She even sees a huge lion dog thing as an avatar for her father. She creates a sort of dream-world where her wishes come true, but as she gets confronted with the harsh reality that her family is gone it becomes cold and hostile.

Oh. Well then how do we add Ash to the mix? Is he the ultimate chosen one destined to SAVE THE WORLD?

No, actually. Molly wishes to have a complete family again, and sees Ash's mother on tv, an acquaintance of her family. She then kidnaps her in order to have her perfect happy family again. It isn't some world-saving quest, but a very personal quest of Ash simply wanting to save his mother.

W-well, then there's no time for epic battles, right?

No, there's several very well done Pokemon battles that make use of the unique dream-like setting, like an underwater battle that puts Misty to full use and the return of Charizard for an all out brawl versus Entei. It's amazing.

But it's still 4kids so whatever.

Strangely enough, it's not that bad. Some of the writing is pretty effective even. They didn't even fuck with the japanese script alot.

And this is why the third movie is the best.

I made my entire family go twice, so I could get all 4 cards. Our theater was giving them out randomly to stop people from buying out showings and then not showing up.

The ending is slightly different, but the only change is that 4Kids moved some scenes around so the bits where we see her father an mother return home happen earlier in the dub, since they didn't want kids to miss them.

That was movie 4. 4Kids thought the original movie wasn't blatant ENOUGH about that faggy kid being a young professor Oak, so they commissioned a couple extra scenes at the start and end of the movie that really spelled it out for the audience.

Okay. You want to know why 3 is bad? Because it's completely flipping forced, that's why. The entire conflict is pointless. I've seen things where the intent was to make the characters irrational, but we're flipping talking full on psychosis here. It's completely overblown, a trait common to things for children. True, it may be something you wouldn't expect from today's sunshine and rainbows mindset, but even for that, it isn't really that compelling. To me, it's like calling something great simply because there is a moment where something isn't happy or blowing up. I can understand this anime creating this mentality, but really? This is what you like? An entire plot coming out of literally nowhere? Yes, I know all the movies except a few of them are extraneous, but this is beyond extraneous. This is having no idea what to do whatsoever. It's not happy faffing about like the end of BW, but it's pretty close to it.
