I mostly know VGC, but until a month or two ago, Smogon had Raikou and Entei as some of the top threats in the game, when neither have ever been in the top 30 usage stats. Marowak used to be B rank viability, despite not being in the top 100 used. Charizard X is still rated highly, despite over 96% of Charizards being Y,
I realise they're based on analysis rather than on usage, but you'd have to be crazy to think that the majority of players are so clueless that what's good is that far removed from what's popular.
