Give each region pokemon with their respective gen sprites, sure a couple ones can show up, but keep it where gens only show up in a certain region.
Then you get the option to pick which region you want to start in, along with the starter of your choice.
Once you beat the elite four and the champion, you get to travel to other regions, each with increasingly difficult gym battles that require some iota of skill. For instance, if you beat the Champion of Kalos and head to the Kanto Region, Brock will have a full party of mons to throw your way, possibly even a mega if Kanto is the last region you choose to beat. Once you beat all the champions, you unlock the Master Stadium and are pitted against ALL the rivals across the gens.
So not only can you travel hither and yon to collect the pokemon, but you can fight the gym leaders all over again and then become the true pokemon master.
How is this a bad idea?
