FR/LG are decent games, they aren't amazing since Kanto itself is fairly bland but considering the updates and more content added like the islands, its definitely stepped up a bit.

Gen 2 made the biggest strides in the series in terms of gameplay mechanics and story. Ironically, this is probably because it treated itself as a sequel and didn't suffer from 2 YEARS PASSED TIME TO REBOOT THE ENTIRE FRANCHISE LOL cancer that Game Freak is doing now.
