>>23070362Not entirely true, but very close to right. Look at Mega Metagross and Salamence vs Mega Garchomp and Tyranitar. Gross and Mence have seemingly worse attack stats at 145 each, compared to Chomp's massive 170 and Ttar's 164. These differences in attack are made up for with Speed, which both Mence and Gross are much better at than Ttar and Chomp. We can ignore bulk, because none run defensive sets because they aren't made for that. Bulk obviously helps a lot, but they're all similar, Mence and Chomp being close and Ttar and Gross being close.
So Chomp and Ttar vs Mence and Gross - Chomp and Ttar are stronger but Mence and Gross are faster. Seems fine initially, but that's where abilities come in.
252 Atk Mega Tyranitar Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mew: 195-229 (57.1 - 67.1%)
252 Atk Mega Garchomp Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mew: 201-237 (58.9 - 69.5%)
252 Atk Tough Claws Mega Metagross Meteor Mash vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mew: 213-252 (62.4 - 73.9%)
252 Atk Aerilate Mega Salamence Return vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mew: 229-271 (67.1 - 79.4%)
All have 252 Attack investment, and all use 100 Base Power moves (I edited Meteor Mash and Return's Base Power to 100) but Gross and Mence actually hit harder thanks to their abilities.
252 Atk Sand Force Mega Garchomp Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mew in Sand: 261-307 (76.5 - 90%)
Chomp's ability means it can hit harder but the difference is that Chomp requires a lot of team support to use its ability, whereas the others sustain themselves.
Basically, it's not just abilities, but a combination of these abilities and higher Speed that puts them over the edge. Obviously that's not all - Mence has D Dance, Roost, Intimidate etc., Gross has Clear Body, amazing typing, huge movepool but in general it's the speed plus thte ability, because speed is a clear cut stat whereas attack doesn't mean all that much when unboosted.
