Didn't play Pokemon X or Y but I'm interested in picking up a new Pokemon game. I played ruby and sapphire a bunch so I'm not really feeling the urge to play the remakes. Will I be able to battle people in Oras, and will I be missing out if I get X or Y instead?

X & Y can't use the new Mega Pokemon and are generally left out from events these days. Beyond that there's no difference.

I think ORAS native online is a seperate entity.

I prefered XY because it was more fresh and has a much, much better variety pre E4.

You miss some new megas but that's it. There are still people to battle online in native XY and you can still trade regardless.
