IIRC up to that point he was basically playing it by ear and the whole point of that episode was that Ash shouldn't try too hard to come up with preformed strategies and just do what he does best.
Which of course is bullshit since we know he can do preplanned shit just fine from DP, but as far as BW goes I don't think he ever put a ton of thought into type matchups and such before that.

Tomioka was also the head writer of May's Contest arc in AG as well as the main series constructor of DP, so the whole Ash/Paul rivalry, Galactic, Hunter J, Dawn's arc...was all his doing.

Goomy has a nice storyline too though.
I thought Froakie's evolution was cool visually but I thought he actually didn't get a lot of character focus that episode. I actually thought Froakie would have his development be a lot slower since we've seen that he gets really frustrated when he loses. I figured they were going for the "he slowly gets outclassed by Ash's other mons, then gets angsty about it" storyline.

I'm thinking hard about how Mega Evo Act IV will play out. What will happen no matter what is that Lysandre will end his little charade and use the Megalith to power the ultimate weapon/overload all the Mega Stones and create an army of Mega Evos, but what do you think Alan will do? I believe the specials will be self-contained and won't significantly intersect with the main anime at least until after Act IV, so I don't think Ash will show up to challenge him or anything. I think Alan will initially go with Lysandre's plan but he'll be talked out of it by Sycamore and return to the light side thanks to Manon's smile while Volt plays. , then he'll face Lysandre and his Gyarados who's become "the strongest mega evolution". Guess Lysandre will get away at the end though, otherwise that would mean no Team Flare at all in the main anime unless they make Xerosic the boss or something. OTOH, it would also be cool to see Alan go full heel and stay with Lysandre in order to be eventually challenged by Ash in the main anime, but it would end the Mega Evo specials on too much of a downer and I don't think they'd do it. Thoughts?

Takaomi Kanezaki, the storyboarder, also worked with Tomioka on one particular episode: the first part of the Ash vs Paul league battle. You can expect great things.
Animation-wise I can't really say, one of the supervisor, Nishitani Yasushi, didn't really work on Pokemon before but he's one of the many animation directors of Gatchaman Crowds. Is it good news or not ?

I actually think Alan will get stronger now that he's starting to go crazy. He was still half-assed about it before but if he goes full crazy, he should get stronger BUT not as strong as someone who is a proper and ideal trainer. Good wins over evil in the end of course. And then Manon snaps Alan out of his darkness before they team-up.
Charizard X vs Charizard Y would be a big bonus. Similar but different to mirror their trainers (be the best VS be the strongest).
