>>23104065The only reason hidden power is used at all is because there's fuck all for coverage without it. Most special attackers have astoundingly shit selection for type coverage with their moves - there's rarely access to more than 3 different types you're lucky if you even have more than one decent STAB attack. So you're stuck with a 60 base power catch all move slot. Sure, you have the type coverage you're looking for, but very often it will fail to be a relevant threat even to pokemon weak to it unless we are talking about 4x weaknesses.
I love it and often breed pokemon for various hidden power types, but I have to admit it's a bandaid. For example, Keldeo is one of the best special attackers in OU and it's ovten seen running a number of different HP types just to have an option to do something against particular counters. It'll often use HP electric, ghost and possibly others in the event that it runs into Jellicent because it literally can't do ANYTHING to Jellicent without them and even with choice specs it BARELY has a chance to 2hko(only 4%.) Sometimes it uses HP flying to deal with Venusaur, but even then it's the same thing - specs is required to 2hko. And regardless of which type you pick it will do absolutely jack shit to anything that isn't weak to it, so it's super hard to set up a situation where you bring your pokemon in and you'll score a kill with HP no matter what the opponent does.
All of this is why the main HPs you see are ice, fire, ground and sometimes grass - they have the most relevant 4x weak pokemon. It's hard not to be a silver bullet when you happen to do 4x damage to exactly what everyone wants to kill. Honestly, sometimes it almost feels like those four types should be the only options for hidden power. Few others make a difference to anything at all.
