However, I believe the "proper" pronunciation is with a long "a" such as in the word "cane." The fact that it's spelled with the "ai" further influences that it would be pronounced with the long "a" as such.
That being said, I don't think you're wrong either way you pronounce it. Just pronounce it however is more comfortable to you.
