The leaf on head was a staple of Chikorita and Bayleef, then Meganium just suddenly loses it.

I think I attribute this to picking Mudkip all the time in my early days with Sapphire, meaning that my rival had Treecko and Grovyle, and then never got a Sceptile.

The imugi are Korean, not Japanese. There's also nothing that specifically ties Dragonair or Dragonite to the imugi. No stuff in the dex about it evolving when the gem gets bigger or some shit like that. Dragonair itself is a very generic Asian dragon that happens to lack limbs.

Part of the problem was that Samurott was never shown in the games to rear up. Maybe it does in XY, but in 5th gen it doesn't. This wouldn't be as much of an issue in 6th gen.

I think Sceptile looks great compared to Grovyle.

To be fair to you though, Sceptile's Gen 3 sprite looked absolutely gruesome.
