Why do Gym Leaders / Elite Four members stick to just one type of Pokemon? Is there any merit to it at all?

What is the best type to base your team around?

My friend once got swept by a Fire team back in the days of Battle Revolution.

Probably because it comes naturally to them, or they relate to the type from how they were raised/being raised around them.

I use a monotype team and that's the only monotype I'm good at. You give me any other type and I won't know how to use it

Its a game for younger folks so the idea of type advantages is an easy mechanic for kids to understand when getting into the game for the first time.

Against the hardcore players I've found using a monotype is bothersome cause you are usually at a disadvantage.
Mono vs Mono is interesting but that could be even more disadvantageous.
Unless its a type that has large variety and few weakness the best reason to go Mono is just to have fun. Last one I did was a Steel-type run in Pokemon Diamond.

Dragon is probably the best monotype to run. The only thing you really have to look out for are fairies.

Fighting in any Gen can usually get you through the main game without too much difficulty.

I've been thinking for a while now that there should be some kind of party-wide buff given to monotype teams.

Each type could have its own buff. Maybe fire-types create some sort of heat wave that halves water damage, or maybe flying types could whip up strong winds that increase speed.

I dunno, could be interesting.

It's so you know what kind of pokemon they will have.

Imagine playing the game and the toughest opponents has a huge team of super powerful pokemon and you have no idea. Unless you like dying a lot or play using save/reset then it's not going to be fun.

It's also pretty cool. It's much better fighting a player that has a thematic team of the same pokemon type than it is to fight someone with a mismatched assortment of random pokemon. What will their gym theme be? Randomness with die and slot machines everywhere?

It's even fun to make your team like that of a gym leader. I sometimes roleplay as someone who want to be a gym leader. Sometimes I have poison teams or even colors like yellow or purple pokemon teams. I tried a sleep pokemon team but it was just not fun, a little too powerful.

I thought it was just to make it look like it is shining like if it was a crystal ball or something but maybe the original design of cloyster was different.
