Unowns are much more exotic and strange in Japan because they don't normally use the Roman Alphabet. It's much harder for them to translate.

Don't they learn english in their schools? Or portuguese since many of them move to Brazil for whatever reasons.

Japanese 5th graders speak better English than most americans, they just cant pronounce it well unless theyve been to English-speaking countries.

I don't know about Japanese keyboards but I'd imagine they'd look something like this.

Since most things on computer happen in the Roman alphabet being able to write it is a must.

From what I've heard, the English that they teach in Japan is the rough equivalent of someone taking a single semester of French, but with a lot more memorization of grammar rules. The vast majority come out of their 12 years of compulsory English lessons without enough to actually hold a conversation.

I've been to a music academy that hosts a lot of japanese students, and each time I talked to one of them I had to rephrase myself in simpler English for them to get the point through.

Japanese Unown sounds like a really interesting idea.
Unowns don't show up in Unova and Kalos, this is the perfect time to introduce new Unown, and say Japanese Unowns are exclusive to non-Japan based regions, while Western Unown are exclusive to Japan based regions.

Speaking and Writing are completely separate in our minds.
Those whom study English in Japan are usually really solid with the grammar, but have not held enough conversations in their daily life to grasp the fluidity of a conversation, so it comes out really weird sounding and on top of that, the accent too.

I also wanted to add that I'm studying Japanese right now, and my grammar/writing/reading is way stronger than my speaking because I don't really have anyone to speak to.
It comes out pretty awkward sometimes.

More on the topic though, I fucking love Unown. One of my favorite Pokemon concepts, tbh.

Most Japanese keyboards have QWERTY as well.

The most common way to type in Japan uses romaji input.

So if I want to type the word meaning "fish," I would first type in "sakana." It would autoconvert into the hiragana (as demonstrated below), and then it will offer a choice of kanji at the end:
