If this were released today as a Rhydon Mega it would fit right in. I'm not one to complain about the new evolutions in Gen 4 but Rhyperior has got to be one of the most bizarrely uncreative Pokémon ever conceived in that they clearly tried to make it different from Rhydon but ended up just making the same thing with shit stapled to it. Strictly design-wise, it's literally a Mega two gens too early.

Same, Its always the first in "awful pokemon" threads, before the likes of Exeggcute or Mr.Mime, it definitely came across as another ebin maymay.
I've loved it since my first playthrough of Diamond; Never gave Rhydon a glance beforehand, but this mountainous dino with its cannon arms, club tail and construction-crew armor made me pick up a Rhyhorn as soon as I could.
Shame its not great in battle but I love its look, regular and shiny.

Honestly, I always liked Rhyperior. People call it overdesigned, but there are a lot more complex ones that get their dick sucked in /vp/. I think the real reason they are butthurt is because they changed the line's grey palette and changed it radically.

And its strange, cause Rhyhorn is WAY overdesigned - it looks like a chibi drawing of a Monster Hunter creature.
Rhydon itself has all that stuff going on around its face too. It must just be the color scheme as you said which I prefer honestly, everyone kept complaining how dull Rock-mons were anyway

The stupid plating might look totally awful, but Rhyperior's wrecking ball tail is extremely cool. No matter how ugly it is, at least it isn't just boring as shit like Rhydon.

There's nothing out of place or unnecessary in its design, though. Its a rock dinosaur/rhino with breaks in enough places to make it being able to move even a little believable

Having a high number of lines or contributing shapes doesn't automatically make things overdesigned, just as having spikes doesn't automatically make things edgy.

The problem isn't that Rhyperior is ugly, its that its different than what people expected. The change in color scheme, the weight gain, and the difference in general design made a lot of people suprised, and they didn't get over it for some reason.

Personally I don't like Rhyperior's design that much but I'm not stupid, I prefer its better HP and Attack. Would use over Eviolite Rhydon anyday due to Knock-Off being so damn common.

It's closer to an axolotl than a mud puppy because of its body shape, and other than the fact that Mudkip has a generic fin tail it's nothing like a mudskipper.

The fact that it's called a Mud Fish pokemon is about as valid as Slowpoke being a hermit crab.

Fun fact: Wooper isn't an axolotl, it's just a baby salamander. Newts and salamanders all have external gills in their juvenile stages, but these features are lost as they mature.

Also, complaining about Rhyperior being fat is dumb since Rhyhorn and Rhydon are wide too. Rhydon even has baby fat arms.

If an axolotl lives in water that's too dirty, it will lose its gills and become like any other mature salamander.

Wooper is a regular salamander, it loses its gills upon evolution. Mudkip is an axolotl, it keeps its gills even as a Swampert.

ehhh thats "IMO" really, it feels to me too generically mid-90's Japan monster, what with the upright-bulky-dinosaur look, the stuff on its face, and the mechanical working drill horn.

Axolotls rarely metamorphose. You can't just keep them in dirty water and expect them to do it. More likely it'll just be a stressed axolotl. A few lines will do it naturally, much like how other species of salamander will sometimes have aberrations that never metamorphose, but it's far from common in the axolotl species. Mudkip is basically a quadrupedal, blue, cutened up mudskipper.

The actual axolotl, mexican axolotl, can't metamorphose under natural conditions. this has only been achieved in a lab. Other salamanders may or not metamorphose but not the axolotl.

When I say naturally, I mean in captivity without giving any hormones. It's happened before with casual hobbyists. I hear the iodine thing bandied about a lot and I think people are more likely to just kill their axie with it. remove the stupid stomach band, and replace the ones on the shoulders and head with craggy sharp rocks, like you'd see on a cliff face.

Now make thin it down, neither rhyhorn nor rhydon were that lardo, and it certainly doesn't make him look any more dangerous.

Then we've got the truly superior rhyperior.

the weird hourglass waist and torso armor thing instead of the tubby rounded body it had before.

Rhyperior's models always look great, and the sprites too. Sugi's art make it look fat and disproportioned. Sugi's art really is going downhill.
Just look at how he can't draw megas. It always takes screenshots of the models to get people to like a mega, not his art.
